What is FES Cycling?

FES Cycling is an effective way of keeping fit when, following a spinal cord injury, regular exercise is difficult to get.

This is a therapeutic activity that uses transcutaneous electrical current to initiate muscle contractions of paralysed lower limbs in persons who have sustained a spinal cord injury or been affected by stroke or MS.

The order and strength of the muscle contractions are controlled by computer to generate the power to pedal a stationary cycle. The aim is not to provide passive motion - but to actively engage the muscles to generate muscle strength and improve fitness.

Benefits

Key benefits of FESCycling exercise are as follows:

  • Cardio-pulmonary fitness
  • Rebuild muscle strength and bulk
  • Improve bone density
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Improve intestinal & bladder function
  • Improve response to insulin (diabetes)
  • Decrease limb spasticity
  • Improved feelings of well-being

FES is a useful in many cerebral motor lesions of the lower limbs including Paraplegia/ Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke

Specialists in Exercise Therapy Adopt RehaStim

Physability was established in 2003 by two exercise therapists; David Akroyd-Jones and Nicky Baldwin following the closure of the National Rehabilitation Centre for the Paralysed. The Centre based in Gloucestershire provides client-centred exercise therapy for clients from all over the U.K and overseas.  Physability use a RehaSrim FES system very creatively in their programmes.

Exercise programmes at Physability are derived from the original concepts of the Dikul Institute in Russia. The exercise programmes are tailor made to meet the individual requirements of each client. “We are able to adapt and modify hundreds of exercises to suit individual abilities. Our mission is to tap into every possible movement each client has to offer optimising potential to regenerate and re-educate muscle function”.

David Akroyd-Jones, partner and exercise therapist at the centre writes  “ we have the ability to tap into a number of disciplines ranging from the original concepts of the Dikul institute in Russia, to the disciplines of sport and exercise science and complimentary therapy in order to meet client centred goals. This provides us with an open mind to exercise therapy and a truly interdisciplinary approach”

Physability adopted FES using the Hasomed FES system in 2008. David writes,  “the Hasomed Rehastim has enabled us to provide FES cycling, rowing and basic gait re-education where walking potential is demonstrated by the client (for example incomplete injury SCI, head injury or stroke). All of our clients have reported feeling ‘whole body workouts following FES rowing and cycling using our adapted concept II rowing machine and combined arm/leg cycle ergometer with FES assisted leg drive.

“The Hasomed system is a truly versatile FES unit that enables us to explore full potential of FES”
