What is FES Cycling?

FES Cycling is an effective way of keeping fit when, following a spinal cord injury, regular exercise is difficult to get.

This is a therapeutic activity that uses transcutaneous electrical current to initiate muscle contractions of paralysed lower limbs in persons who have sustained a spinal cord injury or been affected by stroke or MS.

The order and strength of the muscle contractions are controlled by computer to generate the power to pedal a stationary cycle. The aim is not to provide passive motion - but to actively engage the muscles to generate muscle strength and improve fitness.

Benefits

Key benefits of FESCycling exercise are as follows:

  • Cardio-pulmonary fitness
  • Rebuild muscle strength and bulk
  • Improve bone density
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Improve intestinal & bladder function
  • Improve response to insulin (diabetes)
  • Decrease limb spasticity
  • Improved feelings of well-being

FES is a useful in many cerebral motor lesions of the lower limbs including Paraplegia/ Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke

D-Mannose for Urinary tract Infections

A client's mother phoned me the other day to ask if I could pass on information about D-Mannose.  She was extremely excited about this and was keen that I pass on the information as it may be valuable to others who have had difficulties with persistent urinary tract infections.

I am just going to extract a portion from her email below.  Please note that I am passing this on in good faith as I believe the information comes from a reliable source. However, I have no personal experience with the product and I must point out that I have no financial or other connection with the product's suppliers.  As always, please judge the information for yourself and make your own mind-up.

Oh - and if you have had any experience with this product please let me know and I will circulate your feedback.
Best regards

Dear Derek,

As explained, Chris has been suffering immensely from urine infections since his accident (SCI) 2 years ago.  Nothing could stop the infection from reoccurring; the bacteria increasingly resistant to any antibiotics prescribed.  Over a month ago he started to take D-Mannose and to his amazement the urine infection has gone and he can resume a better life.  He is currently enjoying a holiday in New Zealand for two months.  I don't think this would have been possible without D-Mannose.

I was so happy at the improvements in Chris' health and emotional well being that I wanted to spread the word about the benefits of this life changing substance to other UTI sufferers.  We only found out about D-Mannose when Chris spoke to **** ****, of Standing Start.

I contacted two people who are long term user's of D-Mannose, both agreed to write an account of their personal experience of taking this natural sugar for the Spinal Injury Association (SIA) Forward magazine.

D-Mannose comes as a soluble powder and so can be dissolved in drinks.  Within an hour, 90% of the D-Mannose you take is in the bladder, coating the mannose receptors in the bladder wall and sticking to the molecular attachment points on the fimbria (pili) that normally allows E.Coli, Klebsiella and related bacteria to stick to the tissues of the bladder and urinary tract..

Instead of the bacteria attacking the bladder wall, it adheres to the D-Mannose in the urine and is then flushed away by normal urination.  The D-Mannose is also a natural anti-inflammatory so it also helps calm down and in many cases completely heal interstitial cystitis and uretheritis.

***** **** suggested buying from Sweet Cures who supply D-Mannose, their D-Mannose product is known as Waterfall D-Mannose; extracted from sweet forest timbers.

Sweet Cures strongly advises to avoid taking any form of cranberry juice when you have a UTI.  Although there is a small anti stick effect from cranberry, for the vast majority of bladder infection agents, the acidifying effect of the cranberry more than cancels any benefits from taking it.

D-Mannose will be mentioned in the Christmas edition of Forward.  I hope this will help alleviate suffering.

It was good to speak to you again Derek,
