What is FES Cycling?

FES Cycling is an effective way of keeping fit when, following a spinal cord injury, regular exercise is difficult to get.

This is a therapeutic activity that uses transcutaneous electrical current to initiate muscle contractions of paralysed lower limbs in persons who have sustained a spinal cord injury or been affected by stroke or MS.

The order and strength of the muscle contractions are controlled by computer to generate the power to pedal a stationary cycle. The aim is not to provide passive motion - but to actively engage the muscles to generate muscle strength and improve fitness.

Benefits

Key benefits of FESCycling exercise are as follows:

  • Cardio-pulmonary fitness
  • Rebuild muscle strength and bulk
  • Improve bone density
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Improve intestinal & bladder function
  • Improve response to insulin (diabetes)
  • Decrease limb spasticity
  • Improved feelings of well-being

FES is a useful in many cerebral motor lesions of the lower limbs including Paraplegia/ Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke

NEW benefit for RehaMove users

The flexibility of RehaMove as your FES Cycling choice becomes clearer as the new Sequence Mode Software option is announced.  Until now the stimulator unit needed to be used in connection with a motion trainer. But no longer - its like having two systems for the price of one.

The new RehaStim Sequence mode software allows the stimulator to be used as a free standing unit and the applications suddenly become limited only by your imagination.

For example, in recovery from injury it might be too soon to benefit ffrom FES Cycling - but now you can use RehaStim with Sequence Mode in very early rehabilitation - even in bed.  Once your ready for FES Cycling just connect to the motion trainer and away you go.  Minimal investment - Maximal Benefit

Or when additional muscles need to be activated beyond those normally used with RehaMove in FES Cycling - this allows enhanced intensity of training for certain muscle groups.  For example, alternating activation of quads and hamstrings.

RehaStim with Sequence mode allows completely new applications.

For example to initiate complex movement sequences like grasping.

The cyclical stimulation patterns can use all eight channels and be easily adjusted by the user with the intuitive touch-screen interface.

Already have a RehaMove? - Well you can now ADD Sequence Mode as a low cost software update you can do at home.

If you're about to invest in a RehaMove?- Now can specify RehaStim with Sequence Mode as a low cost accessory.

Sequence Mode adds flexibilty and power to what is already the best value system on the market.
