What is FES Cycling?

FES Cycling is an effective way of keeping fit when, following a spinal cord injury, regular exercise is difficult to get.

This is a therapeutic activity that uses transcutaneous electrical current to initiate muscle contractions of paralysed lower limbs in persons who have sustained a spinal cord injury or been affected by stroke or MS.

The order and strength of the muscle contractions are controlled by computer to generate the power to pedal a stationary cycle. The aim is not to provide passive motion - but to actively engage the muscles to generate muscle strength and improve fitness.

Benefits

Key benefits of FESCycling exercise are as follows:

  • Cardio-pulmonary fitness
  • Rebuild muscle strength and bulk
  • Improve bone density
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Improve intestinal & bladder function
  • Improve response to insulin (diabetes)
  • Decrease limb spasticity
  • Improved feelings of well-being

FES is a useful in many cerebral motor lesions of the lower limbs including Paraplegia/ Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke

Feature Comment
Smooth Drive System The pleasant tone-decreasing eect of the DriveSystem can often be felt soon after starting the training, thanks to the particularly gentle, drive technology. The drive technology consists of a specically developed belt drive as opposed to a gear drive that uses motor controlled software.
Movement Protector Movement Protector automatically detects any spasm that might occur. The motor stops gently, stimulation is cut-o and the the pedals are relieved.
Enhanced Safety The Movement Protector constantly adapts to the basic muscle tone (tension) and is thus optimally sensitive at all times. In this way, even weak spasms are detected reliably and can be treated. This is the only way to ensure maximum safety for joints, muscles and ligaments.
Advanced Spasm Control After a spasm has been detected, the SpasmControl identies the movement direction into which the spasm can be eased smoothly, according to sound therapeutic principles. No pre-setting is necessary.
Residual Muscle Training - valuable for stroke and MS therapy Specically for users with minimal residual muscle strength and muscle weaknesses. Residual muscle strength is detected and built up. Any impulse coming from the legs/ arms is amplied by the syatem so that an acceleration of the pedal can be achieved. Even the smallest amount of muscle strength (also for one-sided paralysis) can be activated and built up. The Spasm Control function is always active.
Active Resistance Training Resistances – ranging from very light to very heavy – can be adjusted in small increments. Intelligent active training from the (wheel-)chair is possible. The Spasm Control function is always active.
Speed Adjustment from 0 to 60 rpm
Motor Power Adjustment from 2 to 17 Nm
Leg Insertion System The pedals can be positioned as you prefer by pressing a button on the remote control (also with inserted leg), or the pedals can stop automatically at the lowest point for easier leg insertion and removal.
Controller - Intelligent Display Easy to use (just press a button), yet with sophisticated conguration and programming options (4 user levels). The integrated operating guide and the feedback of the training data are both visual and acoustic.
Gentle Start and Stop For gradual speed change at the beginning and end of the training and when changing direction, for increased safety and comfort.
